Beads for Life: Independence is empowerment
We have been working with Beads for Life in Kathmandu since 2008. The workshop specialises in creating jewelry and accessories with colourful glass beads. Everything they do is centred around empowering women to build independent lives.
Beads for Life contributes to financial independence and economic security. It provides a financial safety net for unexpected expenses, such as medical costs, as well as childcare and support for quality education. With its caring and supportive culture, the workshop feels like one big family.
Bimala’s story
Bimala has worked at Beads for Life for 16 years. When we ask her why, she answers:
“The warm and supportive workplace is one of the main reasons I have worked here for 16 years. I feel comfortable, and I feel valued as part of the team.”
Has her job changed her life? “Beads for Life has made a meaningful difference in my life. Since I started working here, I have had two children. Thanks to my job, I am able to support and raise them. Being able to contribute financially to my family has also given me greater independence, confidence and security. I am incredibly grateful that my job enables me to support my family while building my own independence.”
But the impact of her job reaches far beyond financial security. Bimala loves her work and is proud of what she does. In her own words:
“I would like to continue working at Beads for Life because this work has become an important part of my life. Over the years, I have gained valuable experience and know my work well. I am grateful for the opportunity to keep growing here and to make a contribution.”
